Paint Diary #3 [KD:M Phoenix] – Colorful and fun take on a huge model
over 2 years ago – Fri, Sep 17, 2021 at 06:43:15 PM

I'm back with one final paint diary! I really wanted to use a good deal of our paints to show off how well they work together across the sets. This model is huge and took me about a week to assemble and paint. It's definitely an ambitious color scheme, but it was done using entirely simple and accessible techniques. I had a lot of fun with it and I hope you like seeing the step-by-step.

100% of the paints, washes, and paint accessories used are referenced and available during this Kickstarter campaign. You can scroll to the bottom if you just want to see the finished model.

Starting with a primed model
Using these colors for the dark tones
Using these colors for the light tones
Paints thinned using our Flow Improver for use in an airbrush
Key ingredients for thinning our paints to use them in an airbrush. The slow keeps the paints from drying in the cups while I switch between colors.
Initial base coat. Looking pretty cool already!
Colors for the skin, claws, and beak.
All finished with the basecoats
Onto applying washes
Model with wash applied
Highlight colors for dry-brushing
Cheap makeup brushes make for excellent dry-brushes
Looking better with the highlight showing through the wash
Highlight, shadow, and wash for the hands
Basecoat > Wash > Drybrush > EZ-PZ
Colors for the "pustules"
Eww
Colors for the "wattle" and/or mustache? I'm honestly not sure what it's supposed to be.
I think blonde was a good choice
Colors for the stump
I think the green mossy effect looks neat
Basing materials: Mossy overgrown tufts, Mud texture paste, Bog 4-in-1 scatter. Available on our website at hugeminis.com
Basing is super quick and easy these days

Thanks for viewing, I hope you've enjoyed following along with these paint diaries!

The crew over at Game Envy have a really neat take on a traditional wet palette. I think it's compelling and unique enough to share, so consider checking it out!

over 2 years ago – Mon, Sep 13, 2021 at 06:24:28 PM

Hello! I'm back again with another paint dairy. I wanted to go through more of our colors and demonstrate the use of our metallics and natural tones. This mini was another fun one to paint and it came together in a single evening.

100% of the paints, washes, and paint accessories used are referenced and available during this Kickstarter campaign. I hope you enjoy the step-by step. You can scroll to the bottom if you just want to see the finished model.

Starting with a primed model
Chose these colors as a undercoat for the gold
Thinned my paints to make them suitable for airbrushing with our Flow Improver, and added a few drops of Slow Dry to extend my work time. (Available as add-ons)
Consistency of milk and ready for airbrushing
Undercoat of yellows and browns
Mid-tone and highlight metallics
Shiny!!
Metallic basecoat applied
I'll be using a brush to apply these colors to the basecoat layer
More colors applied to the basecoat
I'm only using flesh wash for the entire model. It has a great warm brown tone.
Wash applied
Highlight colors
After drybrushing
Colors for the final detail bits
Materials for basing: Desert grass tufts, Red flowers, Desert texture paste, and Sand weathering powders. Available at hugeminis.com

Thank you to everybody for suggesting which colors you'd like to see me use on this model. I painted it up in a style that I'm comfortable with and enjoy. I'll leave the more fine paint jobs to those of you with more talent and ambition than myself.

Wonderful couple of days
over 2 years ago – Thu, Sep 02, 2021 at 02:03:12 PM

These first 48 hours have been incredible. After spending such a long time working to nail these recipes, all the while keeping it entirely secret – finally having this campaign live is a tremendous weight lifted. Thank you for putting your trust in what we do and the products that we make.

I’m going to spend the next few days painting up a model so that I can demonstrate how the paint looks in use. I’ll be taking photos of the various stages of the process and share them in the next update. Let me know if there’s any colors you’d like to see me use.
